Amarillo on my mind

As we ride through the endless plains in our comfortably air-conditioned car, we watch the temperature inch up bit by bit, until it finally reaches a mind-numbing 112 degrees. We watch storms roll in over the plains, as lightning strikes light up the dark plains. But despite the ominous skies, not much rain falls, offering little relief to this parched land. Finally, after an almost 10-hour trip, we roll into Amarillo, known for its cattle ranching. Seeing the massive crowds at the Big Texan, home of the 72-ounce steak (which you get free if you can eat it in an hour), we opt instead for a 13-ounce steak (for Adam) at the nearly-empty Hofbrau Steakhouse. Steak was passable, says Adam, but he thinks he can take on the 72-ouncer next time.
