Seeking to escape the brutal Houston August heat (temperatures reached 105 the week before we left), our family of four headed west to Colorado Springs. Our goal: to beat the heat for one last trip before school starts again and give our kids their first glimpse of mountains. Being gluttons for punishment, and broke after a rather freewheeling summer, we decide to make it a road trip—splitting up the estimated 15-hour trip with a stop in Amarillo. Even worse, we embark on our trip without the requisite, in-car DVD system, as ours is broken and we are too cheap to get a new one. Are we crazy?
