Setting out

Setting out

After packing up half our belongings, the kids and ourselves, we set off on time at about 8 a.m. We drive north up through east Texas and west through the Texas panhandle plains, which is suffering from a severe drought right now. The scenery looks more and more like a "Hellscape," (Adam's words), the further west we drive--scorched grass and brush evidence of recent wildfires. Extremely dry conditions give rise to countless, massive dust devils, which frighten me a little with their likeness to tornadoes. We pass oil fields with derricks bowing to the ground and up again, like toy sipping birds. Small, country towns, each featuring a Dairy Queen, football field and Tex-Mex dive-punctuate the landscape.
